Hunting Information

Wild Pigs in California

August 1995

The main seasons for hunting wild pigs in California are fall or early winter and spring. Consequently, we expect to receive a greater number of hunting and location reports later this year. At first sight it becomes apparent that the wet winter weather has resulted in much improved habitats for wild boar throughout its range in California. Better cover and plenty of food means a higher rate of reproduction. More piglets, more wild boar!

Several guides have told me they expect improved hunting for pigs in late fall/early winter of this year the earliest. Hunting should be even better during the spring season of 1996.

This opinion is corroborated by the following lines received from Alex in early May:

"Thank you very much Peter! I really appreciate the info. BTW, I spoke to a

guide yesterday who told me to wait until next year or the fall at the earliest

since the hog population is WAAAY DOWN due to bad weather in '93 that damaged most of the food sources. Looks like bear in '95 and boar in '96."

After reading the electronic version of the book Christopher B. Ebert contributed some updated phone numbers. Here is what he wrote:

"Here's some updated numbers for the BLM offices that can go into the

latest edition of boar.txt.

Sacramento (916) 979-2800

Ukiah (707) 468-4000

Bakersfield (805) 391-6000

3801 Pegasus Drive

Bakersfield, CA 93308

Desert District/Riverside 1-800-446-6743

(Susanville is unchanged)

Keep up the good work!

Chris 7-10-95"

I have many friends who enjoy hunting Fort Hunter Ligget. Some consider it almost as good as hunting on private land. Here is what Joe had to say about his hunts:

"Thank you very much for the information in "WILD BOAR IN CALIFORNIA - WHERE AND HOW TO HUNT THEM." I truly enjoyed the book. I am just know getting into hunting(all game) though I have had the passion for years. It's just now am I able to take time off and go out and pursue Big Game. I have hunted Wild Boars at Fort Hunter Liggett on a number of occasions this past year with somewhat limited success. My first trip I bagged 326lbs. Boar. Some of the best meat I have ever eaten. I have talked with a number of the police officers that patrol the base and have had in depth

conversations with them in regards to hunters and hunting on the base. There seems to be a number of idiots out there who think because they have hunting licenses and can carry a gun it gives them the right to shoot and kill anything that moves. The officers have told me of a number of occasions in which the have come across deer and elk that have been gut shot, no meat or antlers taken, just plan murdered. But enough of that, Hunter Liggett is a great place for wild
